“Machines not being insufficient” means that this is the amount we’ve always had, and it’s normal for free users to compete for cards. The reason people say resources are insufficient is because we’re currently working on a new polling system to improve performance a bit.
Since we can’t identify real high-usage users, with LXC virtualization, if one user consumes a lot of resources, it will show as high usage for all users, making it impossible to tell them apart.
The admin means that if containers can be started, it counts as “enough machines”; what you mean is that they’re only enough if everything runs smoothly. Both make sense literally.
In reality, the physical machines are over-provisioned. There’s not enough memory assigned, CPUs are shared, and LXC’s resource isolation isn’t strict. If you try to run everything at once, you’ll get OOM (Out of Memory) killing processes or containers, and the CPU will be so overloaded that even running commands inside containers gets slow. The machines can’t really handle 200 containers all running anything at the same time.
Because it’s not feasible. That rule is just there to scare people. The platform can’t actually detect which container is using too many resources, so if something hangs, the only option is to reboot the whole machine.
In that case, why not just delete everything and start over? When there are enough resources for everyone, just stop adding new ones. If anyone else wants to use it, they can wait for previous resources to be released (or the admin can add another batch after a certain number have been released). Also, don’t allow promo users to permanently occupy resources—maybe allow N free renewals with a promo (N to be decided), and no need to meet any requirements for renewal. Just have everyone meet the renewal criteria to extend their usage, and if they can’t, the resources get released automatically. Renewals can be monthly, just like now.
This way, the admin wouldn’t have to handle so many support tickets every day, and everything would be much simpler. To be honest, I don’t really understand the current 7-day policy—it’s unclear whether the goal is to let people use the resources or not. A whole group cycles through every 7 days, but once their turn comes, they only get to use it for 7 days after setting up their environment. So here’s my question: with this policy, how can you be sure people aren’t wasting resources when their turn comes? If each turn only lasts 7 days and users have to set everything up again each time, how many people will actually want to go through this hassle every time it’s their turn?
On top of that, I don’t really see how the 7-day rule reduces resource waste—in fact, it might even make things worse because the increased hassle could lead to even more wasted resources than before.
