TL;DR: Upgrading = meeting the activity requirements. The three essentials—browse more topics to accumulate reading time, visit every day to build up visit days, and interact more (likes/replies). Leaving a webpage open without doing anything won’t work; you actually have to read. Unless necessary, don’t use scripts to farm activity, or you may get banned.
1. First, understand: what are you upgrading?
NodeLoc uses a Trust Level (TL) system, from low to high:
Bronze (TL0) → Silver (TL1) → Gold (TL2) → Diamond (TL3) → King (TL4)
Reaching Silver unlocks initiating private messages, while reaching Gold unlocks real-time chat / profile backgrounds, etc. The stage where most people get stuck is Silver → Gold.
2. Overview of the official upgrade requirements (authoritative source)

Why “about”?
Because reading time is measured in ticks. If the posts you read are fairly substantial and longer, and you read more comments, the actual time needed is less than 10 hours.
The NL forum’s reading-time upgrade mechanism also uses a cumulative system. In other words, reaching 3,000 minutes means reaching that total amount of reading time; before reaching Gold, you will already have accumulated 600 minutes.(This seems a bit redundant..

3. How exactly is reading time calculated?
Many people may wonder, “Why doesn’t my reading time increase when I just leave the webpage open?” That’s right 
. The actual mechanism is:

The post currently displayed on your screen (the main post + every reply all count) adds 1 second of reading time per second;

These seconds are accumulated locally first, then reported to the server together about every 60 seconds;

A single post counts for a maximum of only 6 minutes. No matter how long you stare at one post, it caps out at 6 minutes; -
The following situations do not count: switching away from the tab / minimizing it / the window losing focus; not scrolling for 3 consecutive minutes; or the post not appearing on the current screen.
So in practice: actual reading time ≈ the total time your eyes actually spend viewing each post (capped at 6 minutes per post). The dream of “leaving it open and watching the time increase” is just a dream.
4. Three compliant and efficient ways to farm reading time (just follow these)

Read each topic for about 3 minutes, then move on to the next — because a single post caps out at 6 minutes, staring at one for more than 6 minutes is a waste. Switching between posts lets you farm multiple posts at once, while your visit days also steadily increase.

Keep the tab open and visible; don’t minimize it — switching away or minimizing stops the timer, so leaving it open would be pointless.

Browse for a while every day — Gold requires 30 visit days, which is a hard time-based requirement and cannot be rushed. Simply browsing posts regularly will naturally build them up.
While you’re at it, give a few likes and reply to a few posts (please give some likes, fellow friends), so you can meet the requirements for “likes received / given” and “number of replies” at the same time.
