Got burned by Wise—unless you really need it, better stay away.

If you deposit funds using RMB, the fees are the highest, but if you go through some foreign European banks, there’s basically no fee at all. If you have a Hong Kong card, you can also deposit, and the fees are very low. Domestic accounts are mainly used for withdrawing funds elsewhere, and then you can exchange them into Hong Kong dollars for spending.

Some Hong Kong-issued Visa cards are actually pretty easy to open; you can check them out on YouTube.

No passport, no chance to go to Hong Kong, and even ZhongAn requires an entry and exit ticket.

There was a time when I really wanted to open this type of card, but then I looked into all the pitfalls.
After learning more about the downsides, I gave up right away. I think using a domestic Visa card is good enough—it’s not like you need a foreign card for everything.

Wise is pretty good—it tells you in advance about anything you’re applying for.
Wise is mainly valuable as an account, with convenient currency conversion.
If you’re only getting it to get things for free, I still wouldn’t recommend it. Everyone places a lot of importance on this account.

A £20 top-up is just way too much — if the account gets banned after I load it, that’s a major loss.
